BIONICLE Advanced Wars: Hidden Legends

Hello, everyone! And welcome to my new ongoing epic! This is an account of adventures that the Toa Metru had when you weren’t looking: the Hidden Legends. Kind of a comedy/adventure/Vakama+Nokama pseudo-romance. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it (it's not likely that you will enjoy it quite that much)!

Part One: Abyss

Toa Nokama stared down into the black, dismal hole in the cavern floor in front of her. Of course, she couldn’t see anything. She doubted that even Nuju would be able to see the bottom with his telescopic lens. If there even was a bottom.

Next to her, Toa Vakama used his power to create a bright flare and cast it down into the darkness. It fell for a long time before the distance swallowed it.

“You know, I wonder, sometimes.” Toa Onewa spoke up, staring at the hole and crossing his arms. “Maybe somebody just puts this kind of stuff here to torture us poor novice Toa for his own entertainment.”

“Don’t be so morbid, Onewa.” Nokama chided with a small smile. “After all, we always manage to find a way through, don’t we?”

“Only up until this point.” Onewa replied dismally.

The Toa Metru were in the sublevels of the Archives, where they had just done battle with a strange, shape-shifting Rahi named Krahka. Although they had been victorious (arguably), their elemental powers were virtually depleted, which presented a small difficulty in crossing the huge, gaping fissure that blocked their way. They had taken a different route to find their way back out of the sublevels than they had taken to get in, but this route was turning out not to be much easier. There was no bridge, and none of them could manage to conjure much more than a fist-sized chunk of their respective element.

“I think we’re going about this the wrong way.” Onewa broke in, moving to the edge and staring into the blackness. “Matau can fly, can’t he? Why don’t we just get him to carry us over?”

“What do I look like, a cargo hauler?” Matau objected incredulously. “Besides, I don’t have enough wind-power left to lift-carry both of us. And you do thought-remember what happened the last time we tried crossing a dark-pit without a bridge, right, ice-brother?” He glanced brightly at Nuju, who replied with an acidic glance.

Nokama glanced at Vakama. She could tell that he was considering something, but evidently was not going to share it without a little prodding.

“What are you thinking, Vakama?” she whispered so that only he could hear, not wanting everybody to turn to him expectantly.

“Nothing.” Vakama murmured in reply. “Just that, even after only a few days of being Toa, we’ve already come to rely so much on our elemental powers that we seem to have forgotten how to do anything without them.”

Nokama smiled. Of all her comrades, Vakama was the one least comfortable with becoming a Toa. Although he had learned much about being a hero in the past several days, he still didn’t seem ready to fully accept what he was. Although it occasionally made him falter in times of action, it also made him more conscious of the fact that a Toa’s true power was ingenuity, not elemental energy. It was something she admired in him, although she often wished that he would find the resolve to stand and embrace his destiny.

“Did you have anything in mind?” Nokama asked after a moment of thought.

Vakama pointed up. “Not specifically, but I was thinking maybe we could do something with those.” The Toa of Fire indicated the ceiling of the cavern, which was dripping with stalactites that were five times as long as the Toa were tall, and three times as wide.

Nuju saw where he was pointing and reviewed the idea analytically. “If they were dropped at just the right angle, perhaps…”

“What are you plot-planning?” Matau interrupted.

“Something to which I’m sure Onewa would have no objection. We build a bridge.”

“Is that thought-wise?” the Toa of Air scoffed, looking up at the stalactites. “And just how do you propose we slice-cut a rock off the ceiling?”

“Ha, that’s the easy part,” Onewa interjected. “The better question is, how do we get them to land at the right angle?”

“Matau, do you have enough power left to keep them at the right angle?” Vakama asked.

“I can try.”

“And Onewa, can you bring them down?”

“Yeah, probably.”

“Nuju, get ready. When they come down, freeze them together to keep them in place. Nokama, you can help him.”

Nuju nodded. Nokama smiled.

“When I give the word.” Vakama said, loading a disk into his launcher and aiming for the base of the stalactite. It was true that none of the Toa had enough power to create a bridge on their own, but together, they might just be able to manage it.

“Now!”

Vakama’s disk and Onewa’s powers over stone went to work at the same time, the disk’s weakness power loosening one stone, then ricocheting and loosening another. Onewa’s power bit through the stone and sent them both tumbling downward.

Acting immediately, Matau conjured the biggest wind he possibly could and managed to push the ends of the stalactites towards the edges of the fissure. Nokama and Nuju acted just as quickly, the Toa of Water creating pockets of water around the stone and the Toa of Ice quickly freezing it. When it was over, their creation stood; a bridge that spanned the entire length of the hole.

“Hmm, not bad.” Onewa said with a smile of admiration. “Not my best work, but hey, a bridge is a bridge, right?”

Whenua stepped forward and threw a handful of dirt onto the bridge. When everyone looked at him, he shrugged and said, “I felt like I should do something.”

The Toa carefully crossed the bridge in single file. Vakama allowed everyone to go in front of him, deep in thought. Nokama stayed behind with him for a second and put a hand on his arm. She smiled. “I would call that ingenuity.”

Vakama looked at her, then smiled. “Well, it wasn’t all my idea.”

“No, maybe not.” Nokama replied, giving him an affectionate tap on the side of his mask. “But you did rely on a weapon other than your elemental powers.”

This is great! Not much love, but very nice.

One of the best short stories I've seen in a long time.

And thank you so much! As it so happens, this is the first BIONICLE fanfic I've ever posted, so I didn't really know what to expect as per other people's reactions.

That's good! I think you caught the characters just right! I like when Whenua just suddenly steps into the story, and throws dirt xD
But I do believe you used tree-speak way too much on Matau. And a word with as high lix as "incredulously" shouldn't be placed right after Matau xD But your story, and this one likes it.

Oh, and you spelled "accept" wrong - come on, yourr, like, three years older than me xD

I can see why Greg doesn't like writing for characters who use tree (or chute) -speak, because it is both difficult and annoying.

Thank you! I feel like I know the characters like friends; that's why I enjoy writing for them.

"Accept?" Aw, come on, how do you expect me to catch that kind of thing at midnight? XD And anyway, I fixed it. Thanks for the correction. ;D

Yes, that non-existent transition between TDB and LoMN was weird. I always thought that would be a good place to have some extra Toa Metru adventures that would fit into the canon. So that's what I'm doing!

I understand what you're saying, yes. I probably should have revised it a little more before posting it. I just wrote it, corrected a few glaring things, and stuck it up here. XD

Also, thank you very much! The BIONICLE fan-fictions I write are usually designed to mimic Greg's style. Even if the subject matter sometimes strays away from anything he would actually write for BIONICLE.

Yeah...

Although there was that year-long gap between BC#3 and BC#4. Athough... it's been, like, 5 years. XD

But the point is moot anyway, because I don't have a snowball's chance in the lava falls to get my story accepted by the BIONICLE story team; especially since it hints at romance, which is not canon.

But maybe fans will enjoy it.

*drools while she considers the possibilities...*

However, that phrase could also mean "that would be wonderful" if the LEGO group made everything official. He's asking you which.
